"An in-depth history, description and analysis of Latvian national costumes. It begins by describing national costumes up to the mid-18th century. It then discusses the materials, design and wearing traditions of these costumes including a summary of the types of natural products used to create colors, and the techniques for weaving and sewing the costumes including shirts, skirts, pants, belts, aprons, shawls, sweaters, stockings, and mittens. Shoes and jewelry are also discussed. There are many detailed photographs and sewing instructions, a map showing the distribution of different skirt patterns, diagrams showing how to tie head scarves by region and many other interesting pieces of information. The author analyzes Latvian national costumes within the context of the socio-economic environment (age, family and social structures), local variations as well as comparisons with neighboring countries. Interspersed with the text are Latvian 'tautas dziesmas' that refer to the creation and wearing of the costumes."
