The only monograph on these 17th- early 20th century rare, piled rugs which are a part of a tradition of Nordic bedcovers that stretched from Ireland to Finland. These woolen rugs were made with natural dyes in bold designs often incorporating Nordic and Shetlandic folklore. Many were woven as wedding gifts, one half woven by each family and then sewn together and were valued family heirlooms. Most include a provenance. Dr. Carol Christiansen is curator for the Shetland Museum and Archives.
