Bennett, Ian and Aziz Bassoul: Rugs of the Caucasus from Three Private Lebanese Collections (Tapis du Caucase a Travers Trois Collections Libanaises Privees)

Beirut 2003

114 Color Plates 140 Color Details 286 pp. 8.5 x 12 Hardback in New condition.

Nicholas Sursock Museum exhibition catalog. French/English text. 106 pieces were on display, 62 of which came from Dr. Aziz Bassoul's own collection. The others were loaned by the international rug-dealer Serge Nalbandian, and by Dimitri Trad. Ian Bennett wrote the introduction and the 80 critical commentaries where the English text is that the top of the page. Dr. Bassoul provided the other 26... , a note on The Caucasus, and the chapter on The Caucasian Prayer Rug. To this he has appended a table of the dimensions of the 24 prayer rugs in the exhibition, and worked out their length to width... The exhibits fall into seven categories... Kazak; Karabagh; Gendjeh, Moghan, Talish and Lenkoram; Shirvan; Kuba; Daghestan; flat weaves. Four of them are shown across two pages. Enlargements of the fields of various exhibits serve to separate the various texts; the erratum slip doubles as a bookmark (and features exhibit #39 on the other side)... These are the most attractive Caucasians to surface in print since Kaffel's "Caucasian Prayer Rugs" of 1998... The local printers deserve great praise for the quality of their work. The plates are large and clear and the color values are totally credible. This is an item that will bring great joy not just to many "ruggies" but, especially, to all lovers and collectors of, and dealers in Caucasian rugs. -Reviewed in "L' Orient Le Jour" of Beirut, June 6, 2003 by Edgar Davidian
